Every day, Chicago sends an average of 2.05 billion gallons of water down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. Lakeside can promote water-efficient living and restore balance with the lake through strategies that conserve, reuse and return 90% of storm and waste water to Lake Michigan. Lakeside can construct water-efficient buildings and communities with state-of-the-art technologies, including green roofs, permeable paving and well-landscaped streets, and bioswales and finger parks. To reduce the amount of lakewater consumed, Lakeside can reclaim, treat and reuse water on-site. Living machine and membrane bioreactor systems would treat waste water, and cisterns and groundwater would harvest rainwater.
