Currently, 85% of Chicago’s residential waste ends up in landfill. By reducing and converting the waste into a resource, Lakeside can put waste to work. Efficient collection methods can increase the rates of recycling and use of recycled and reclaimed materials, which will reduce consumption of natural resources and reduce waste to landfill. Additionally, waste can be separated into different types: 3-bin sorting can divide waste into recyclables, organics and residuals, and bulk waste drop-off centers can be used for yard waste, electronics, construction materials & hazardous waste. And organic waste can be reused to produce district heat and increase sewage heat recovery.
