Building with Wood:
McCaffery Interests is working with the Idaho Forest Group, Austrian-based KLH, the Soft Lumber Board and Lakeside master planner, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, to advance designs, engineering and technologies to build tall wood buildings in Chicago at Lakeside. Chicago was chosen as the North American hub for such applied research because of its strength of academic communities, highly skilled construction trades and building code. Building tall structures with wood is not only feasible from an engineering perspective, it also advances the sustainable goals established by and for Lakeside. McCaffery Interests was invited to attend a White House event on March 18th where the US Department of Agriculture and cabinet Secretary Tom Vilsack announced two, $1 million grants to advance the design and engineering of taller buildings in North America. McCaffery Interests has plans underway to build the first buildings at Lakeside using cross laminated timber technology. As speakers at the conference put it, “What is more sustainable than wood – a renewable resource that naturally filters carbon from the atmosphere.”
